Open Enrollment 2027: Every Deadline Gulf Coast Families Need to Know

Open enrollment for 2027 health plans opens November 1, 2026 — and if you buy your own coverage, the dates this year matter more than most. Subsidy rules, plan networks, and pricing have all shifted, and the deadlines are hard ones. Miss them and, outside a qualifying life event, you're generally waiting until 2028.

Here's every date that matters, in one place.

The ACA Marketplace dates for 2027 plans

    • November 1, 2026 — Open Enrollment begins. You can browse, compare, and enroll in 2027 Marketplace plans.
    • December 15, 2026 — Enroll or make changes by this date and your new coverage starts January 1, 2027. This is the date most people should circle in red.
    • January 15, 2027 — Open Enrollment closes. Enrollments after December 15 but before this date generally start February 1, 2027.
    • After January 15 — You can only enroll if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (losing job coverage, moving, marriage, birth, adoption, and a few others — you typically have 60 days from the event).

    What's changed for 2027

A few things I'm walking clients through this fall:

    • Subsidy rules have tightened. The enhanced premium tax credits that made 2025 and 2026 Marketplace plans unusually cheap have expired. Many families on the Gulf Coast are seeing real premium increases for the first time in three years. That makes comparing plans — not just renewing — genuinely worth an hour.
    • Silver-loading and plan tiers vary by county. Pricing in Baldwin County and Mobile County doesn't match Escambia County, Florida, because the carriers and hospital networks differ. A plan that's the best deal in Foley can be a bad pick in Pensacola.
    • Networks keep narrowing. Check that your doctor and nearest hospital are in-network for 2027 — not for 2026. Carrier directories change every January.

    Don't forget employer open enrollment

If you get coverage through work, your employer sets its own window — most run between late October and mid-December. Watch for the enrollment email; it usually arrives in early November and the deadline sneaks up fast. The same logic applies: re-check the plan, the doctors, and the price before you auto-renew.

One more window: Medicare AEP is running right now

If you're on Medicare, your window is different — the Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, with changes effective January 1. It's a completely separate system from the ACA Marketplace, and plenty of Gulf Coast households have one spouse on each. See my full AEP checklist for what to review.

How to be ready before November 1

    1. Gather the basics now — ages and zip codes for everyone on the application, estimated 2027 household income, and current plan details.
    2. List your doctors and prescriptions — network and drug-tier changes drive most of the bad surprises.
    3. Know your deadline — December 15 for January 1 coverage, January 15 for everything else.
    4. Get a second opinion on the price. Renewing without comparing is how families overpay. As an independent agent I compare plans from multiple carriers side by side, at no cost to you.

    Frequently asked questions

When does open enrollment start for 2027 health insurance? November 1, 2026. It runs through January 15, 2027 for ACA Marketplace plans.

What is the December 15 deadline? Enroll or change plans by December 15, 2026 and your coverage starts January 1, 2027. Enroll after that (but by January 15) and coverage generally starts February 1.

What if I miss the January 15 deadline? You'll need a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby, or similar — for a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. Otherwise you wait until November 2027.

Is Medicare open enrollment the same dates? No. Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 through December 7, with changes effective January 1. It's separate from the ACA Marketplace window.

Does it cost anything to get help enrolling? No. Help from a licensed independent agent like 1 Stop Coverage is free — carriers pay us, not you.
